Graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1979.
She is one of the elite ten thespians to have been nominated for both a
Supporting and a Lead Acting Academy Award in the same year. In 2003, she was
nominated for a Supporting Oscar for her role in The Hours (2002), and in the
Lead category for her role in Far from Heaven (2002). The other nine are Fay
Bainter, Teresa Wright, Barry Fitzgerald (he has been nominated in both
categories for the same role in the same movie), Jessica Lange, Al Pacino,
Sigourney Weaver, Emma Thompson, Holly Hunter, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Foxx.
She and Joan Cusack played pregnant women in Nine Months (1995). In 1997,
their own sons were born.

Was considered for the lead role of "Deirdre Burroughs" in Running with
Scissors (2006). The part eventually went to Annette Bening.
